Subject: Yabun - Constitutional Reform letters

At Yabun last week Kingsford Legal Centre, along with CLCNSW, Marrickville Legal Centre and Redfern Legal Centre, ran a promotion to increase the community’s awareness of the Australian Government’s commitment to have a referendum to include recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Australian constitution.

Attached is an information sheet that provides some brief information about what is happening re this issue. Also attached is a template letter for people to provide comments and feedback to an expert panel that the Government has set up to undertake community consultations and progress this issue.

The Kingsford Legal Centre would like to encourage people in the community to use the attached template letter to have their own say on this issue. The proper recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Australian constitution is another step towards rebuilding the relationship between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people in Australia.

All responses should be scanned and emailed to Anna Hartree at a.hartree at unsw.edu.au . Anna will print off the responses, put them in a specially addressed envelope, and post them to the expert panel.

Thanks for your assistance.

Regards

Ron Timbery
